Since the beginning of the year, reporters and critics have focused their sights on one of the world’s greatest athletes, Roger Federer. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have taken advantage of a dismal Federer and seem to be closing the gap in the rankings. Some may assume that there is nothing left for the Swiss king to achieve, considering he has won almost everything. So what exactly is next for the No.1 player?

Already in his young career he has accomplished more than virtually any player before him. He has been ranked No.1 in the world since 2004.

In Grand Slams he has finished just shy of claiming a career slam, as the French Open eludes him. But he has finished runner-up in Paris, just falling short to Nadal. He has managed to capture more consecutive Wimbledon titles than any man before and continues to excel on grass. Just as outstanding is the fact that in 2006 and 2007 he captured six Grand Slam titles. With a dozen Majors to his name, there is no doubt that he can add more.

‘Once Federer shakes off the rust and the viral illness that has clearly affected him, there is no denying he will be eager to push himself further away from Djokovic and Nadal again.’

He also continues to add tournaments to his already illustrious trophy cabinet. His career seems to be far from over, so there is no telling how far he can go.

Even though he may have surpassed a lot of records already, there is no doubt that Federer is hungry for more success. Already acknowledged as one of the greatest players of all time, why should he continue to prove himself as an ultimate tennis great?

At one point he was a couple of thousand points ahead of his nearest rival, and after a lacklustre season, his ranking could be in jeopardy. Once Federer shakes off the rust and the viral illness that has clearly affected him, there is no denying he will be eager to push himself further away from Djokovic and Rafael Nadal again.

He may have started the year off slow, but he already announced the reasoning behind that. One can’t expect even the world’s greatest player to rebound from debilitating illness.  Once the Swiss phenomenon regains his strength and power, he will most likely pick up where he left off. The desire he has within will not disappear and he won’t stop fighting. There is so much left for Federer to accomplish – he hasn’t achieved his destiny yet.
