A worrying slump has got the critics wondering if the world No.1 is past his best, but he is not yet ready to hand his crown to Nadal or Djokovic.

Since the beginning of the year, reporters and critics have focused their sights on one of the world’s greatest athletes, Roger Federer. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have taken advantage of a dismal Federer and seem to be closing the gap in the rankings. Some may assume that there is nothing left for the Swiss king to achieve, considering he has won almost everything. So what exactly is next for the No.1 player?Already in his young career he has accomplished more than virtually any player before him. He has been ranked No.1 in the world since 2004.In Grand Slams he has finished just shy of claiming a career slam, as the French Open eludes him. But he has finished runner-up in Paris, just falling short to Nadal. He has managed to capture more consecutive Wimbledon titles than any man before and continues to excel on grass. Just as outstanding is the fact that in 2006 and 2007 he captured six Grand Slam titles. With a dozen Majors to his name, there is no doubt that he can add more.‘Once Federer shakes off the rust and the viral illness that has clearly affected him, there is no denying he will be eager to push himself further away from Djokovic and Nadal again.’He also continues to add tournaments to his already illustrious trophy cabinet. His career seems to be far from over, so there is no telling how far he can go.Even though he may have surpassed a lot of records already, there is no doubt that Federer is hungry for more success. Already acknowledged as one of the greatest players of all time, why should he continue to prove himself as an ultimate tennis great? At one point he was a couple of thousand points ahead of his nearest rival, and after a lacklustre season, his ranking could be in jeopardy. Once Federer shakes off the rust and the viral illness that has clearly affected him, there is no denying he will be eager to push himself further away from Djokovic and Rafael Nadal again.

That is right, Anne. Number one until someone wins consistently on all surfaces and takes the number one ranking. It may happen this year, but I am dubious. Neither Djokovic nor Nadal, for very different reasons, have the strength to win week after week on the tour. It may be that Federer also can no longer do this, as he has for the ;last four years. It will make tennis more interesting, I think. Either way, we shall learn what the future is over the next six months.

Thank you Abe, for writing an article that shows trust and faith in Roger. The rest of the press for the past 4 months has largely been writing him off, but I think you're right- he'll be back for sure. True champions always bounce back- he just needs time =]
