Roger Federer's great Monte Carlo escape doesn't augur well for the French Open
The Swiss master was down 5-1 to world No.137 Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in the third set but somehow he managed to escape and get to the third round. Nevertheless, his form suggests he might struggle in Paris.

I live in Los Angeles. While you Londoners and east coasters were wondering how Roger Federer escaped his second-round match with qualifier Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in Monte Carlo, I was sleeping. When I saw the scoreboard, it looked like Federer had just squeaked by in a third-set tiebreaker. It didn’t say anything about coming back from 5-1 in the third set. Let’s see what happened and what it might say about Fed’s game at the moment.'I don’t see Federer being in overall good enough shape to win at Roland Garros this year, but at least his vaunted confidence seems to be intact'First of all, how did this match get to a third set? Ramirez Hidalgo is, after all, ranked 137 in the world. I can’t help comparing Ruben to Novak Djokovic’s parody of him and I see where it comes from. Hidalgo has one sleeve rolled all the way up and one rolled down and his forehand looks like he’s trying to slice the ball in half with an upside-down frying pan. His service motion is similar to Filippo Volandri’s except that Ramirez Hidalgo often has to chase his toss. I’ve often thought it would be nearly impossible to change a stroke after you’ve been practising it for ten or 12 years. The subject came up at Indian Wells because Sania Mirza’s forehand is causing problems in her wrist and she recently had surgery on it. I asked Andy Fitzell if Mirza could change her stroke at this point in her career and he said that he had worked with players and improved their stroke in a short period of working with them. He told me that he once worked with David Wheaton and added, I believe, 10 mph (16 kph) to his serve.

Hi Nina. I just wrote in another commentary. There are a few weeks till RG and Roger with all the ups and downs, has managed to win a title on clay and is now in QF of a master series.I would not rush to write him off any clay tournament this year. He might even lose in master series, but his eyes are set on FO and I bet you he will peak at the right time for RG. However, the exposure of his human side, has eased the pressure on him and to his benefit. I don't believe Federer was worse than Hidalgo. Maybe he was experimenting some shots. But at 1-5 he decided to take the game seriously and win the match. I don't see anyone as a serious threat to Federer until I see him in RG. Federer wants FO badly. That's his goal for the year and I imagine all his efforts are directed towards that.so, don't even for a second think that he is vulnareble or week on clay. He lost to Roddick in exhibition and went back to win him good in AO a few days later. He lost to Volandri last year, yet won Hamburg and played final in RG. Don't be surprised if that happens again. This is from Monfils's presser the day before his match with Fed: Q. Is it better to play Federer on clay? GAËL MONFILS: It's the same. Apart from Nadal, Federer never loses either on this surface, so it's going to be as tough as elsewhere.

Hi Zola, you make very good points. I just think Fed is shaky enough and other players solid enough - as evidenced by three bagels today at Monte Carlo. I see Fed getting to semifinals and, possibly finals but, to me, there's a fundamental shakiness to his game and I'm honestly more concerned that his timing and consistency will be back for Wimbledon which requires better timing and is Fed's focus. He has a big game and lots of parts to put together and if he gets to the RG final he'll be back where he was last year but it's a lot to expect that he will be beyond where he was last year. His saving grace might be that schedule because how is Nadal doing to play all those tournaments in such a short period of time and still be able to last to the end of RG. Would he give up some points and pull a Davydenko and pull out of a Rome qarterfinal or semifinal to be ready for RG. I think he's too principled which is also why he played Hamburg last year even though he was exhausted and that could help Mr. Federer if he's not too exhausted himself.

Hi Nina, I don't know if you watched the matches or ot. But Federer sure was back to his old self when it was necessary. The good thing is that from now on, we should not be hearing about illness/fatigue/mono anymore. Fed is on the mission to win FO and all his efforts and preparations are directed that way.

I didn't see Fed and Nalbandian but I read Nate Cunningham's live blog of it: http://mvn.com/tennis/2008/04/25/grudge-matches. Excellent job by Federer and I'm thinking he should take Djokovic because, in my opinion, he is still untested on clay. He's never beaten Nadal or Federer on clay and his semifinal at Roland Garros was admirable but a bit misleading. The highest ranked player he beat was number 51. By the way, I will be one happy character if Fed wins a clay tournament or two. I want to see a few more years of his magnificent play.

What happened to Roger's face - looks as if he's been bitten by a bug.

I know. A carbuncle of some sort :0) just kidding. It looks like a birthmark and I have no idea what is it though I wondered if one if more likely to have something like that if you're immune system is impaired. If you get mono, you're immune system is impaired.

Hi Nina, Just happened upon this article. I myself did NOT work with Weaton, but Vic Braden DID. He helped him go from 118 to 128 on the serve in the matter of about an hour. As the story goes, he aced Agassi 22 times the next week. Apparently David's mother (and coach) didn't like the changes to the serve and made him go back to the old one. Funny world we live in. Federer has done an amazing job at raising the level of tennis. He has pulled other players up and now needs to keep improving himself to widen the gap again. More and more players are believing they can win when the step on the court with Roger as well. I would love to see Fed win the French, but I think we will see an earlier exit this year.
