It's Serena Williams's French Open to lose
Maria Sharapova may be world No.1 but the American ace has a great chance of knocking her off her pedestal in Paris – as long as she can beat her own demons.

In watching this year’s French Open, it seems to be Serena Williams’s title to lose. After the surprising retirement of Justine Henin, the field is wide open.
There seems to be a lot of hoopla surrounding Maria Sharapova becoming No.1, but I don’t see the big deal since it came at the expense of losing a great clay court player in Justine Henin. And I can’t remember the last time Sharapova beat Serena.
Williams seems dialled in. She’s fit and seems determined and dedicated to overtaking Sharapova for the top spot. I really don’t see Serena having any problems in winning this year’s French Open. I think if anyone beats Serena, it will be Serena beating herself.
Her mental game is the toughest out there. If she keeps playing the way she has throughout this year, she will be holding the trophy high, and I think Serena feels she has something to prove to herself and her fans.
I’ve watched both Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic. Neither player has what it takes at this point to beat Serena. Jankovic needs to work on her serve, while Ivanovic moves OK on the clay, but she doesn’t have the mental edge or the power that Serena has. Both Serbs are good tennis players in their own right but when players like the Williams sisters, Sharapova and even Lindsay Davenport are playing at the top of their game, the Serbians don’t stand a chance.
Ordinarily, I would say Serena should beware of her sister Venus but Venus’s focus is off. She doesn’t have the same intensity about her game that she once had. Venus appears to have a rollercoaster game. I don’t see her making it into the third round. Her serve is off and she doesn’t get the ball back in play as often as she used to.
She no longer seems to have the drive or motivation to win a Grand Slam other than Wimbledon. Players no longer fear Venus – or Serena, for that matter – but I think Serena intimidates players more than Venus.
The player I do see having a great run in Paris is Svetlana Kuznetsova. She’s strong and has a great serve and has improved her fitness level. Kuznetsova is the sleeper. I am keeping an eye on her.
What will be interesting to see is the young guns – Anna Chakvetadze, Marion Bartoli and Agnes Szavay. I can’t wait to see how they handle the clay. And, although Dinara Safina beat Serena recently, I don’t see that happening again.
Well, the French Open is in full swing, and the hustle and bustle of the game is being sidelined momentarily due to the rain, but I can’t wait to see Serena win her ninth Major.

You're right, based off of the first round, Serena has looked so comfortable. Maria showed her signature fighting spirit, coming within 2 points of losing but prevailing 8-6 in the third, but it just goes to show how on clay, she's vulnerable to lower ranked opponents too. I'm not giving up on Maria yet - I think she has what it takes to win, it's just that Serena will be the one she has to beat.

can i ask why everybody is saying serne'a gonna win? this is craziness, yes serena is the only former champ in the draw, but she has so much trouble in her draw to where you can't put her in the finals. she has patty schnyder in the 4th or 3rd round, and ivanovic in the quarters. if she gets past that it'll be venus or jankovic who will be waiting in the semis, that won't be tough wether its venus or jankovic. yes, i think serena is the one to beat, but she can easily lose, she doesn't move that great anymore. like i said, with venus at least you know that each match she will hav her streaks, her peaks and valleys, but serena, you never know when the bad match is going to come. serena can play wonderful matches and then out of the blue she'll play a completely horrible match littering the court with errors non-stop. so, don't write serena's name on the trophy just yet!

Hey Evans, please try to keep the positives flowing in the Sisters' direction. I know u wish well for the sisters so don't be hesitant in believing that one of them would win the french open. Believe me, there are a lot of WS haters out there who are publicly putting them down. So if u've got their back, don't be afraid to let people know. Serena or Venus will definitely take the french open this year. By the way, while I agree that Schnyder is a tricky fellow, Serena beat her this year during one of the tier titles she won. Have faith Evans. The WS will not disappoint.

This is the year that Serena will probably lift her second roland garros title..just because she was pushed in the second set it doesn't mean she struggled as such..its not easy taking on a french player on the parisian clay..every player struggles with that..so yeah Serena is my pick..followed by venus..after round 4..don't count venus out though..she can be excrutiatingly dangerous in the latter stages

She struggled but she won easily.... enough said really so watch the space called Serena!

Ha ha. Srebotnik, Schnyder, Ivanovic, Jankovic, Kuznetsova/Dementieva/Safina? Hardly an easy draw, especially on clay. I predict a loss before the semis. Serena is great on hard courts, but her footing on clay is suspect even today, despite her claiming she is a 'great claycourt player', and that she 'slides naturally'. Go Jelena/Ana/Sveta.

HAhaha. so watch the space called Serena! This was good. It was better for Serena to wtach the space called Srebotnik- Better player isn't for her. Now she can go to another foto sesion to show her naked body. Without recket off course

ooh you serena fan just outdid yourself again. that le femme chocolate whatever lost to srebotnik already, duh! I'm so amused by y'all serenafans, always counting the chicks before they are hacthed. the French Open was never hers to begin with. It was/is an open tournament with Henin's retirement. You guys have no shame claiming it belongs to Serena even before the Tournament begins.
