The grass court season is firmly under way and still there is nothing to divide the three stars at the top of mens tennis.
Rafael Nadal is fresh from his French Open triumph last Sunday and is already into another final, this time on the grass of the Qqueen's Club in London in the Stella Artois tournament. He has blasted through the draw on a surface that is strange to him compared to the clay he has played on for the past couple of months.
However Nadal is a two-time Wimbledon finalist so can clearly play on the green stuff and yesterday's semi-final was no exception. He destroyed the hopes of four-time former champion Andy Roddick. He played unbeleivable tennis and his shot-making was at times brilliant, often confusing Roddick with his angles and baseline power.
Roddick didn't play a bad game but Rafa is on a roll and I beleive only Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will be able to stop the Spaniard from winning at the All-England Club starting next weekend. He is now only about 1000 points behind Federer in the ATP rankings and with the Swiss Master still needing to defend two Grand Slams this year the slightest hiccup could move Nadal closer and even overtake the great man.
However, Djokovic himslef is only 300 points behind his Spanish rival and is in terrific form himself. He put up the biggest fight of all the other players against Nadal in Paris losing to his rival in the semis but like the Spaniard, Novak has been in sizzling form in London.
He blasted his way past Lleyton Hewitt in the quarters 6-2 6-2 and then demolished former Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian of Argentina 6-1 6-0 playing a brilliant baseline game and mixing up his serve well against his older opponent.
Djokovic is my man to overtake both Nadal and Federer in the latter half of the season as his consistency is second to none. Now the clay season has finished Novak will know he can compete well against his two rivals and has nothing to fear. I think today's Stgella Arftois final against Nadal will be a classic and one that i think the young Serbian will win.
Djokovic has less points to defend than Roger Federer in the second half of the season and if his conssitency continues then he has the game and the momentum to split Roger and Rafa.
Federer is not having a bad season. He has reached the finals in Monte Carlo, Hamburg at the French Open and this week in Halle, Germany. Although the field at the German grass court event is not as strong as at the Stella Artois tournament, Federer has still reached the final and it now over 50 matches since his last defeat on the surface.
Federer seems to have quickly put behind him the humiliating defeat to Nadal last weekend and looks happy once again with his grass court game. He has big points to defend in the coming months but he is a great champion and will not let his ranking slip lightly. He has been No. 1 for the past three years and nothing would delight him more than to keep hold of it for the rest of 2008.
The three-horse battle for supremacy on the ATP tour between Federer, Nadal and Djokovic is brilliant for tennis. They are all fighting for that elusive No. 1 spot and this is making even the smaller tournaments exciting to watch.
Wimbledon will be a key indicator as to who will be the top player at the end of the year but it's certainly going to be close. Djokovic is my favourite not only for the Wimbledon title but also the world No. 1 crown in the coming months.
The Serbian is having a brilliant 2008, and with compatriot Ana Ivanovic reaching the top in the women's game, it seems Djokovic is destined to make it a Serbian double at the world's summit.
