Andy Murray is Britain's sole singles survivor in Wimbledon's second week, but what a start he's made!
After a series of fine victories against Fabrice Santoro, Tommy Haas and Xavier Malisse in the first three rounds, Murray was trying to progress to a Grand Slam quarter-final for the first time, but his opponent, Richard Gasquet, was not going to be an easy player to get past. Late on Monday evening I rushed home from a hard day in the office to catch a glimpse of the British No. 1.
By the time i had switched on the TV Murray had already lost a tight first set 7-5 and, at 3-0 down in the second, he looked doomed against his French rival. Gasquet was playing consistent grass court tennis and making fewer mistakes on his ground strokes and on his serve. Murray was serving at below 50 per cent first serve and, although the match got close at the end of the set, Andy looked frustrated and wasted break back points, losing the set 6-3.
Gasquet, a semi-finalist at last year's tournament, had numerous break opportunities in the third set before finally brekaing the Brit to serve for a straight, three-set victory. The crowd was relatively subdued and Murray was down and out.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, Murray found his shots and broke back against Gasquet and eventually won a brilliant tie-break to take the match into a fourth set. Some of the shots were fantastic and Gasquet couldn't believe what was happening.
The crowd (and my housemates) all started to cheer more loudly and Murray was once again back in the match. It only got better from that point on as Murray became dominant.
By now we all had very sore throats from the shouting. Murray showed just what a talent he is, winning the fourth set 6-2 and breaking his opponent in the first game of the fifth set. Only the growing darkness could save the Frenchman now, but luckily Murray just had enough time to wrap up the match and move into a quarter-final showdown against Rafael Nadal.
Nadal is the favourite of many to finally lift the Wimbledon crown after reaching the final for the last two years. But Murray has nothing to lose. If the crowd support him as they did in the last two sets of his clash with Gasquet then anything is possible.
Murray is only three matches away from being the champion at the All England Club and, as long as he deals with the pressure and plays an attacking game, then he could defeat Nadal on Wednesday and would surely start as a favourite against Rainer Schuettler or Arnaud Clement in the semi-finals.
Murray showed on Monday what he is capable of. With wins against two former semi-finalists in this year's tournament already he really is ready to go a few steps further in the game. Not only has he fought his way to the second week of Wimbledon, maybe, just maybe, he can reach the final weekend of the tournament.
His victory over Gasquet was one of the best matches I have seen over the past 20 years of following tennis - and beats all of Tim Henman's attempts to lift the great trophy. Finally the crowds and TV viewers have seen the real Andy Murray, and if Nadal was watching then he knows he will have his hands full.
Win a Grand Slam? You cannot be serious! Yes I can. Murray is the best - a true Braveheart.
