Too tired to take on another tennis tournament? Take a look at Rafael Nadal for inspiration!

Time and again we have heard some of the famous names in the game of tennis complaining about the rigorous ATP calendar.
Whether they are right or not, one has to consider that every sport in this world talks about making money. From the ATP committee's point of view, it is very clear that the more tennis tournaments there are the more sponsors would get involved and obviously more money would be generated. Now whether they have crossed the line and put the pressure of fitness on the players is something that can be debated.
I sometimes wonder; these players make so much money and for doing what? They only make it because they are good at what they do. Sport is a profession which requires you to stay fit, anyway. It's like work for these guys who call themselves professionals. If they are indeed professionals, they should just stop complaining and get to work. They should realise that the more they play, the more they earn.
So, if the ATP calendar gets too tough for you, just miss a tournament or two. Take your breaks. What is the big deal anyway?
I think they have to realise that if they have got into something as a profession, they have to attend to the needs of it. One of thoe needs is fitness. I notice some of these players, including the top ones in the world, just don't look like sportsmen any more. Leaving Rafael Nadal out - he is the greatest example of fitness I have ever seen - all others who complain should look at themselves. If they feel it's too hard on their bodies they should either work harder or just quit. You are not going to win matches sitting in the corner and complaining.
I don't think the ATP calendar is tough. If the players feel it's tough, they should take a break in the middle. You don't need to play every tournament just because it's there.
The ranking might suffer a bit but obviously a player who stays fit and plays the whole year deserves to be higher in the ranking, anyway. He is surely the better professional.

It's a bit hard to leave Nadal out of this debate as he's probably the loudest complainer when it comes to the ATP schedule.

Imagine the following: Federer asked to play 4 ATP 1 week hardcourt tournaments followed by a (2 week) Grand Slam in the span of 7 weeks, and let these be tournaments all of which with one exception he has won the previous three years. Would he, or anyone in his shoes, not complain that the schedule this year had been squeezed beyond what is reasonable, to the point that avoidable injuries would become even more likely? That is what happened with the claycourt season this year: even more compressed than in previous years. It is in this light that Nadal's complaints have to be understood. As it happens he did get an injury that may have been avoidable (bad blisters on his right foot) and he lost in the first round of a tournament (Rome) he had won three years running, albeit to an excellent player.
