Ending the year in the top ten of the best tennis women players in the world may be a surprise for you, but not the phenomenon that is the Williams sisters. Serena at No. 6 and Venus No. 8 I would bet that what's on there minds is the history making No. 1 and No. 2 spots.

Serena has qualified for next month's season-ending WTA Championships in Madrid. The Zurich Open, where she was the fifth player to qualify along with Justine Henin, Jelena Jankovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Ana Ivanovic, is an event that will end the year with a bang.

Recently Serena was undone by a slew of errors and lost the Kremlin Cup final in Moscow 5-7 6-1 6-1 to Elena Dementieva, who won her hometown tournament at the third attempt. While winning the Sony Ericsson and Australian Opens this year and making it to three quarter-finals (losing to No. 1 Justine Henin each time) she still made it.

'The main thing the Williams sisters need to focus on is health and a consistent tour schedule'

Big sister Venus, now 27, still has a couple more years of fight in her. She won three titles this year including her fourth Wimbledon. It has truly been a grand year for Venus. She won the Wimbledon trophy on the anniversary of Althea Gibson's win and landed a lucrative contract with Steve & Barry's clothing. We have yet to see if Venus will qualify for the season-ending WTA event in Zurich. Having amassed 36 career titles and Olympic Gold in singles and doubles with sister Serena, there's much more to come.

Let's look ahead to 2008. The main thing the Williams sisters need to focus on is health and a consistent tour schedule. By doing this they have nowhere else to go but upwards, towards the Nos. 1 and 2 spots in the world.

There was some talk about current players on the WTA Tour who should get inducted into the Tennis Hall Of Fame. If anyone deserves to be considered it is the wonderful Williams sisters who have brokenso many  records and will continue to do so until they retire!

How do you rate the Williams sisters? Will they ever make the Nos.1 and 2 spots? Post your comments below or submit an article to Sportingo.
