Fans of cycling are in for a treat as the Giro d'Italia once again gets underway in Italy. Tracing its start all the way back to 1909, this event is the pride of Italy and along with the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana it is one of the three Grand Tours. Known to the locals as Giro, the competition is spread out over three weeks in late spring and is a long distance road racing stage race for professional cyclists. Italy's own Danilo Di Luca was the toast of the country after his victory in 2007. The 2008 Giro d'Italia will be noted for its number of time trials – four – as it ends and begins with timed tests.
